Chandra Prakash Tamang: Empowering Education in the Hills of Sewalung
Through dedication, leadership, and a deep commitment to rural education, Chandra Prakash Tamang is helping build a stronger and more inspiring learning environment for children in Sewalung.
The Journey Begins
Born in 1995, Chandra Prakash Tamang serves as the Head Teacher of Sewalung School in Phaktanglung Rural Municipality, one of the most remote and geographically challenging areas of Taplejung.
His journey in education began as a local subject teacher, working in a context where resources were limited and access was often difficult. Even in those early years, he remained committed to the belief that children in remote communities deserve the same opportunities to learn and grow as children anywhere else.
Over time, he strengthened his qualifications, passed the Teacher Service Commission examination, and gradually took on greater responsibility within the school.
Growing into Leadership
In 2023, Chandra formally assumed the role of Head Teacher.
Stepping into leadership brought new responsibilities, but also a renewed sense of purpose. Working in a remote setting with challenging terrain and irregular student attendance is not easy, yet he has continued to approach the role with determination and optimism.
For Chandra, school leadership is not only about administration. It is about creating an environment where children feel encouraged to attend, teachers feel motivated to give their best, and the school becomes a positive force within the wider community.
Creating Change

Training, leadership workshops, and mentoring played an important role in Chandra’s growth from teacher to school leader.
These opportunities helped strengthen his confidence, leadership skills, and ability to guide school improvement in a demanding rural context. With professional support and practical learning, he has been able to lead with greater clarity and vision.
He is especially appreciative of the support provided through Samarthya Foundation and the earlier contributions of REED Nepal, which he sees as important in helping him grow into his role.
Chandra’s journey is a reminder that leadership in rural education often begins with persistence, local commitment, and a willingness to keep working through challenges.
From starting as a local teacher to becoming Head Teacher in one of Taplejung’s most remote communities, he continues to show how committed educators can shape stronger schools and brighter futures for children.
Looking Ahead
Chandra envisions Sewalung School as a joyful, inclusive, and community-driven place of learning.
He wants the school to be a space where students feel motivated, teachers feel supported, and the wider community feels connected to the future of its children. His hope is to strengthen school culture and create an environment where every child, regardless of where they come from, has the chance to learn with confidence and purpose.
His story reflects the importance of investing not only in schools, but also in the people who lead them.
In Their Words
“Thanks to the training and guidance from Samarthya Foundation and the previous organization. I have gained the confidence and capacity to lead as the head teacher in one of the most geographically challenging areas. My dream is to build a strong school culture where students are motivated to learn and grow, no matter where they come from.”
