Indra Prakash Mabohang: Leading School Change Through Community Action
Through active school leadership, community mobilisation, and regular engagement with students and teachers, Indra is helping create a stronger and more supportive learning environment.
The Journey Begins
Born in 1995, Indra Prakash Mabohang completed his education through Grade 12 and remained closely connected to his community.
Before becoming Chairperson of the School Management Committee, he spent three years serving as a committee member. That experience helped him understand the needs of the school and the responsibilities involved in school governance.
He later volunteered to take on the role of SMC Chairperson because of his strong interest in improving education and supporting his community.
Growing into Leadership
The first few months in the role required adjustment, but Indra gradually developed a stronger understanding of his responsibilities.
Now in the second year of his four-year term, he takes an active role in school improvement and regularly works with teachers, the ward, and the rural municipality.
Because he lives close to the school, he visits regularly, interacts with teachers and students, and follows up on issues related to attendance, learning, and the school environment.

Creating Change
Indra has helped support a number of practical improvements at the school.
He has worked with local government structures to improve school facilities, including school compound development and classroom wall racks for learning materials.
He also supported the development of an organic school plot by helping mobilize labour, plants, seeds, and fertilizer. The plot now gives students opportunities for practical learning, including activities linked to subjects such as science.
He has also encouraged stronger use of the school library and has observed students spending free time reading books based on their interests.
Strengthening Accountability
Indra places strong emphasis on regular attendance, punctuality, responsibility, and discipline.
He occasionally visits classrooms, with the head teacher’s approval, to speak with students about their studies, challenges, and expectations.
He has also monitored whether homework is being assigned and checked, whether students arrive prepared for school, and whether teachers and students are maintaining regular attendance.
For Indra, stronger school performance depends on everyone taking responsibility for their role.

Looking Ahead
Indra hopes to continue strengthening links between the school and the wider community.
He is interested in working with Samarthya Foundation to develop community orientation activities and create opportunities for children to access reading spaces outside normal school hours.
He also supports the idea of establishing a youth volunteering group to expand learning opportunities and community participation.
Even after his term as SMC Chairperson ends, he says he intends to remain involved in improving the school.
In His Words
“I am very keen to focus on regularity of both the teacher as well as students. Occasionally, I had to make difficult decisions when someone was consistently late for assemble time.
Even though I knew about Himalayan Trust UK before my nomination as SMC chair, I now recognize the vital role that the kind donors perform. It was difficult to improve student learning and to get them to attend class every day in addition to setting up a conducive learning environment at home.
The idea for a "youth volunteering group" was proposed by Rajendra Pant. By doing this, another significant step towards improving learning opportunities would be created. I will not stop working to enhance the school even if someone else takes over my responsibilities in the coming days.
I am overjoyed that I had the opportunity to meet the trustee of Himalayan Trust UK on his most recent tour. In a similar vein, I am incredibly grateful to Samarthya Foundation for bestowing upon me the Best SMC Award, which has increased my sense of responsibility to work towards the school's improvement.”
